Playing Years
Born Charles Dillon Stengel in Kansas City in 1890, "Casey", as he later came to be known, appeared in his first Major League game with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1912. Between 1912 and 1925, Stengel played for five teams, and helped the New York Giants win the World Series in 1923. While Stengel was a solid baseball player, he would find true baseball success as a manager.
Managing Years
In 1934, Stengel was named manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and managed the team for three seasons before moving to the Boston Braves in 1938. However, these teams did not perform very well, and it was not until 1949 when Stengel would find managerial success. That year, he was hired as the skipper of the New York Yankees, and inherited a superstar team, with players such as Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, and Joe DiMaggio. He led the Yankees to a World Series victory in 1949, and then repeated the feat the next four seasons, setting a baseball record that has never been broken. After leaving the Yankees in 1960, Stengel became the manager of the newly created New York Mets in their opening season in 1962. During his four years with the hapless Mets, Stengel's team finished last every year. Stengel retired near the end of the 1965 season after breaking his hip in a fall; he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966, the year immediately following his retirement.
