The 2005 movie Casanova is inspired by the life of Italian libertine Giovanni Giacomo Casanova (played by Heath Ledger). In the film, Casanova, a man known for having hundreds of lovers, flees the persecution of the Catholic Church as he attempts to find the one woman to spend the rest of his life with.
The Real Casanova
Unlike in the movie, the real Casanova worked in church law while he was in Venice, starting at the age of 15. After sexual scandals, he left Venice with the military, only to return shortly thereafter - and depart a few years later due to a sexual scandal, going on a tour of several European capitals. This pattern would continue for many more years. During the period recounted in the film, Casanova was not almost executed. In fact, while Casanova would be imprisoned several times during his life, he was never threatened with death.
