Mercury Cars

Mercury was an automobile manufacturer owned by Ford Motor Company that was first launched in 1938 by Henry Ford's son, Edsel. The Dearborn, Michigan-based Mercury was created with the intent to market entry-level luxury cars.

Mercury Cars

1935: Edsel Ford designed a new brand of a luxurious Ford version named after the Roman god, Mercury.
1938: The production of the 1939 Mercury 8 began with a horsepower of 95 in a V8 engine. The cost was $916, the equivalent of $14,000 today.
1945: Mercury was combined with Lincoln into the Lincoln-Mercury Division of Ford. 
1958: The Lincoln-Mercury Division was joined into the Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln Division.
1967: The Mercury Cougar was introduced.
1978: Mercury sales reached an all-time high of 580,000.
1993: Mercury sales rebounded to their highest level since 1978 - 480,000.
2010: Ford announced Mercury would be closed by the end of the year as the line represented about one percent of the North American automobile market.c
