1979: A new symbol for Mazda is established and cumulative production reaches 10 million vehicles. The Ford Motor Company and Mazda enter into a capital tie-up.

1982: Mazda wins Japanese Car of the Year for the FWD Capella.
1984: The company is officially renamed the Mazda Motor Corporation and the Mazda Foundation is formed.
1986: The Festiva debuts.
1987: An OEM agreement with Suzuki is reached for the production of micro-mini vehicles.

1992: The Mazda Global Environmental Charter is adopted and a passenger car with a natural gas engine is developed.
