Hydrogen (H2) fuel is an emergent fuel source that is being developed in conjunction with hydrogen fuel cells to power vehicles and to generate electricity.c
Hydrogen Fuel Overview
When hydrogen is burned as a fuel it does not produce carbon dioxide like other fuels. This means there are less omissions of pollutants into the air.c
Hydrogen Fuel Viability
Although the U.S. Department of Energy has invested more than half a billion dollars into hydrogen fuel research, there are still several hurdles to overcome before hydrogen fuel can become ubiquitous.c These include concerns over cost, production, storage, distribution and safety.
Although progress has been made, research continues with the hopes that eventually hydrogen fuel will not only power vehicles, but will power cell phones, computers, homes and most everything around us.c c
Cost and Availability
Availability is another hurdle as hydrogen is only available at a handful of locations currently, mostly in California.c
Hydrogen Fuel Benefits
In terms of the environment, hydrogen produces zero emissions in terms of air pollutants or greenhouse gases.c
