How to Get a Drivers License

A driver's license can give you freedom and flexibility. Just make sure you are ready for the responsibility by checking the requirements for your state and practicing driving on a regular basis. This page takes you through the steps of how to get a driver's license.

Step 1: Check the Requirements

The requirements to get a driver's license, including the age when you are eligible, are different in each state. Check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for the requirements in your state.

1.The minimum age to get a license varies between 16 and 18.
2. There are different types of licenses and the basic license will not allow you to drive tractors, motorcycles or vehicles over a certain weight.c

Step 2: Pass the Written Test

In order to get a driver's permit to practice driving, you usually have to pass the written test. The written tests differ in each state as well.

  1. Visit the DMV to pick up the driver's manual, which describes laws, regulations, safety precautions and other important information you need to know to apply for your license.
  2. The driver's manual can usually be accessed online as well.
  3. Study.
  4. Pass the written test, which is a multiple choice test on the information in the driver's manual.
  5. Pass the vision test.

Step 3: Apply for a Driver's Permit

Before you can start practice driving, you usually need a driver's permit.

  1. A driver's permit allows you to drive only if there is an adult with a license in the passenger's seat.
  2. The specific requirements for the driver's permit, including the requirements of the person in the passenger's seat, differ in each state.c

Step 4: Practice Driving

The most important part of getting a driver's license is practicing how to drive.

  1. Review the driver's manual on a regular basis.
  2. Practice often, but avoid long sessions to avoid loss of focus.
  3. If your state requires it, sign up for a driver's education class.
  4. It's wise to take at least a few driving lessons to get a feel for what to expect during an actual driving test.

Step 5: Take the Driver's Test

Check your state's regulations for when you can take the driver's test. Some states require you to have had a driver's permit for a certain amount of time first.c

  1. If you fail, you will get more chances to take the test. Continue practicing.
  2. If you pass, you will receive a temporary license until you take a trip to the DMV for your permanent license.c
