Chinese manufacturer BYD, a leading supplier of nickel-cadmium batteries, founded its electric car division in 2003.

2003: BYD Limited buys Tsinchuan Automobile Company Limited and the electric car division of BYD is founded.
2004: BYD starts producing their first model - the F3 - which becomes a top seller in China.
2005: The F3DM debuts as hybrid vehicle with the capacity to travel 62 miles before reverting to its backup, gasoline engine.
2006: The F3e debuts.
2007: The F3R debuts.
2008: Businessman Warren Buffet invests $230 million into BYD, taking a 10 percent share.c BYD debuts the F6 and F0.c
2009: BYD displays their E6 model at the Berkshire Hathaway meeting and the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The E6 can carry five passengers nearly 250 miles on one charge.c
