Alternative fuel refers to any type of non-petroleum-based vehicle fuel. Typically, the goal of alternative fuel is to offer a combination of cleaner emissions, renewability, efficiency and the reduction of reliance on foreign oil.
Types of Alternative Fuel
The United States Department of Energyc recognizes the following as valid alternative fuels:
- Alcohols: ethanol and methanolc c
- Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): natural gas under high pressure
- Electricity: stored in batteriesc
- Hydrogen - type of gasc
- Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): natural gas that is very coldc
- Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): also called propane, hydrocarbon gases under low pressurec
- Liquids Made From Coal: gasoline and diesel fuel that does not come from petroleum
- Biodiesel: like diesel fuel, but made from plant oil or animal fatc
