  • Carol Deutsch was a Jewish artist who died in the Buchenwald concentration camp during the Holocaust. Between 1941 and 1942, Deutsch created 99 biblical illustrations while hiding from the Nazis in Belgium. He hid the portraits in a handcrafted wooden box in his home before he was arrested and taken to Auschwitz in 1943.
  • Rediscovery

Deutsch's daughter, Ingrid Deutsch survived the war and discovered that the box containing the art was the only thing remaining in her childhood home: The Nazis had confiscated everything else, but may have left the box since it was adorned with Jewish symbols. Ingrid Deutsch donated the paintings to the Yad Vashem Museum of Holocaust Art where they are on display.
  • Illustrated Bible

In early 2008, the Yad Vashem Museum decided to compile reproductions of Deutsch's paintings into an illustrated Bible. They produced 500 numbered copies of the folio, the first of which was presented to President George W. Bush when he visited the museum.
