Carmel, California is a small sea-side town located in Monterey California. It is known for its picturesque oceanic landscapes, and its dedication to aesthetic and performing arts.
History of Carmel
The origins of Carmel date back to the Native Americans Esselen people and the first European settlers of Spain, but it wasn't until 1602 that Carmelite Friar Sebastian Vizcaino discovered Carmel Valley. The valley which was named are the patron saint Our Lady of Mount Carmel remained unpopulated until 1769. First beginning as a small population of missionaries, it didn't officially become an official part of the U.S. until 1848.
Arts and Entertainment
Known for its artist community, Carmel has a large offering of theatrical venues and galleries including the Sunset Cultural Center, Golden Bough Playhouse, Pacific Repertory Theater, Forest Theater, Hawk Tower and Harrison Memorial Library.
Shopping
While there are some clothing boutiques and a Saks Fifth Avenue the prominent focus of shopping in Carmel is for antiques and artwork. There are a number of antique shops in the area offering Victorian decor, japanese artifacts and collectible jewelry. There are also dozens of art galleries selling emerging and established work from artists in California and around the world.
