Carly Smithson I Drove All Night

American Idol contestant Carly Smithson performed Cyndi Lauper's version of the song "I Drove All Night" on the March 5, 2008 episode of the hit singing competition episode of the hit televised singing competition. The song was originally recorded by Roy Orbison in 1987, but it was not released it until after his death. Lauper's version of the song was released in 1989 and peaked at number six on the Billboard pop music chart.

1. Randy: "Yo Carly you keep smashing it every week. I love that dude. Another great performance."
2. Paula: "You are like a dependable dog. I think you are totally into your niche, and there aren't enough adjectives to describe your singing."
3. Simon: "Once again, I don't think you chose the right song. You made the most out of it, but I just didn't like the version of the song. It's just not a great song and doesn't give you what you deserve. You could sing the phone book."
