Pena was chosen in the first round of the 1998 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers. Pena made his debut for the Rangers in 2001, but was traded to the Oakland Athletics after the season and then again to the Detroit Tigers in the middle of the 2002 season. Pena was the Tigers everyday first baseman from 2003 to 2005 but never finished any of the three seasons with over a .250 batting average.
