A highly touted prospect, Pena was chosen in the first round of the 1998 draft by the Texas Rangers. Pena made his debut for the Rangers in 2001, but was traded to the Oakland Athletics after the season and then again to the Detroit Tigers in the middle of the 2002 season. Pena was the Tigers everyday first baseman from 2003 to 2005, and while he showed promise, his performance was underwhelming, never finishing a season with over a .250 batting average. In 2007, however, he signed with the Devil Rays and finally had the breakout season he had been waiting for, clubbing 46 home runs, 121 RBIs, with an impressive .282 average.Baseball-Reference.com: Carlos Pena
