Carlos Monasterios attended Liceo Rafael Arebalo Gonzalez in Higuerote, Venezuela. He participated in Dodgers' Winter Development Program this past January and was signed to a 1-year $400,000 contract on with the Dodgers on February 28th, 2010. Monasterio found himself part of a trade between the Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies. The Yankees sent Monasterio along with Matt Smith and C. J. Henry to Philadelphia in exchange for Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle.

Monasterio found his way to the Los Angeles Dodgers after the New York Mets selected him in the 2009 Rule V Draft. The Mets did not hold on him that long before trading him.

Monasterios began season with Single-A Clearwater, the affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies going 5-6 with two saves and a 3.73 earned run average in 35 games. He had 71 strikeouts while walking only 27. In his 7 spot starts, he went 3-3 with a 2.82 ERA. Opponents of Monasterios batted .237. On September 2, he was promoted to Double-A Reading, allowing three runs in 7.1 innings, a 3.68 ERA in two games.
