Carlos Jose Gomes, of Sao Paulo, Brazil competed in the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2, 2008. He crossed the finish line at about 4:30 p.m. and collapsed after he complained that he felt ill. Gomes was pronounced dead at Lenox Hill Hospital about an hour later. Cardiac Arrests at NYC Marathon
Besides Gomes, two other runners also suffered cardiac arrests while participating in the marathon on November 2, 2008. A 59-year-old man named Jean-Louis Maubaret, collapsed collapsed on the Queensboro Bridge and another runner gave him CPR until emergency medical technicians arrived.
