  • Carlos Jose Gomes, of Sao Paulo, Brazil competed in the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2, 2008. He crossed the finish line at about 4:30 p.m. and collapsed after he complained that he felt ill. Gomes was pronounced dead at Lenox Hill Hospital about an hour later.   • Cardiac Arrests at NYC Marathon

    Besides Gomes, two other runners also suffered cardiac arrests while participating in the marathon on November 2, 2008. A 59-year-old man named Jean-Louis Maubaret, collapsed collapsed on the Queensboro Bridge and another runner gave him CPR until emergency medical technicians arrived.
