  • Brief Background

A native of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Delgado signed with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1988 as a free agent, and made his first, brief appearance with the franchise during the 1993 season. By 1996, Delgado had established himself as one of the best power hitters in the game, and between 1998 and 2006, Delgado hit over 100 RBIs in every season but one, and hit over 30 home runs each season. After a season with the Florida Marlins in 2005, Delgado signed with the New York Mets in 2006. In 2007, his production diminished across the board, but he is still a feared presence at the plate.

On October 31, 2008, the Mets picked up the option for Carlos Delgado's contract for the 2009 Major League Baseball season. Delgado hit .271 with 38 home runs and 115 RBIs in 2008. SI.com: Mets pick up Delgado's option (October 31, 2008)

  • Controversy

In 2004, Delgado courted controversy by refusing to stand for the singing of "God Bless America" at Yankee Stadium as a silent protest against the Iraq War.
