Carlo Jenka was born October 15th, 1986 in Obersaxen, Switzerland. He started skiing at the age of 2 years old in a small town of Obersaxen, Switzerland. Jenka decided to choose alpine skiing over soccer due to his inspiration of Austrian star Hermann Maier at the 1998 Nagano Games. Like his skiing icon, Jenka has a interesting nickname as well. Due to his laid back personality, Jenka has earned the nickname “Iceman” from his teammates. He also earned the nickname due to his ability to never get nervous during intense situations and always having a poker face during successful times or failures. http://www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=2088/bio/index.html
It didn’t take long for Jenka to reach the milestone of his Olympian star. In December 2009, Jenka managed to win three alpine events just like Hermann Maier. Ten years after Maier won gaint slalom, super-g and downhill, Jenka grabbed victories in the super combined (one downhill and one slalom run), downhill and giant slalom. Jenka also won these events in consecutive days, unlike his inspiration Maier. http://www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=2088/bio/index.html
Carlo had to deal with tragedy while training in Kitzbuehelin January 2009. One of his close friends, Daniel Albrecht, the 2007 world super-combined champion, was in a horrific crash, and went into a coma. Carlo realized how important it was to have Albrecht. http://www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=2088/bio/index.html "Besides the human aspect, [meeting Albrecht] is very important for us as a team. Dani was always like the leader of our training group, and I owe very much to him."
December 13th, 2008, Jenka recorded his first World Cup victory, in the giant slalom at Val d'Isere. That was the site at of the Alpine events at the 1992 Olympics. Two months later, Jenka returned to Val d’lsere for the World Championships and won the his first gold medal in the giant slalom event. This day was especially important for Jenka because his close friend Albrecht woke up from his induced coma that day as well. http://www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=2088/bio/index.html
