On Friday, December 18, 2009, approximately 447,000 infant car seat carriers were recalled due to a flaw in the handle bolts. The bolts attaching the handle and seat together can come loose, causing the handle to detach from the seat altogether. This puts babies at risk for injuries from falls. At the time of the recall, at least three baby injuries had been reported, including one head injury.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091219/ap_on_bi_ge/us_baby_car_seats_recall
The recall involves certain models of car seats made by Dorel Juvenile Group, Inc., which sells its baby carriers under the brand names Safety 1st, Cosco, Eddie Bauer, and Disney. Car seats affected by the recall have been sold in stores across the United States and Canada over the past two years.http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/recalled-car-seat-has-been-sold-in-canada/article1405986/
Recall Background and Details
The announcement of the recall was made on December 18, 2009 jointly by the Dorel Juvenile Group, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, after the manufacturer received 77 separate complaints about the carrying handle dislocating from the seat. The flaw at the center of the recall is a bolt that can easily loosen.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that the car seat still meets federal safety standards when used according to instructions in cars. Because this defect only affects the car seat's capacity as a carrier, parents should stop using the seat as a carrier.
The recall does NOT affect the strollers sold with the car seats.http://www.djgusa.com/usa/eng/Safety-Notices/Detail/441-Fall-Hazard-Prompts-NHTSA,-CPSC-and-Dorel-Juvenile-Group-to-Announce-Recall-of-Infant-Car-Seat-Carriers
