Windshield repair is often used as an option to replacing an entire automobile windshield. When driving, small rocks or other debris may damage or chip a windshield. Although many of these chips are not visible under normal circumstances, more severe chips can cause further damage if left untreated.c There are several commercial companies that provide windshield repair services and there are also do-it-yourself kits for those that have the mechanical ability to work on their vehicles at home.
Sealing the Damage
Damage or chips to a windshield that remain untreated can cause cracks which may develop into spider webbing or allowing moisture to seep under the membrane of the glass layers; this moisture can cause fogging or condensation that can make it difficult to see while driving.
By injecting a resin into the chip or small crack, the damage is sealed to avoid further complications. Do-it-yourself windshield kits can be purchased from most automotive supply stores, online retailers such as Amazon or JC Whitney, or by purchasing kits directly from the manufacturer's website.
Windshield Advice
Following professional advice will limit the amount of damage and time taken to do personal repairs.c
Cleaning
The most important thing to do before starting any project fixing glass is to make sure that the surface is clean. For this job stay away from ammonia-based cleaners and go with a product that is alcohol-based. Use a soft terry cloth towel to wipe dry and check to make sure the scratch or chip is debris-free.
Scratches
For scratches, a simple 1:1:1 mixture of two tablespoons of glycerin, jeweler's rouge and water can be used. These ingredients must be mixed well and applied to the scratched area. Make sure that the solution fills the crack, but be careful not to press against the surface. The area will cure in about 30 seconds. For deeper cracks, repeat the process.
Chips
For chips in your windshield, the process is similar, but will require a different approach. Purchase a chip repair kit, which can be found at most automotive stores and general merchandisers for around $15 to $20. Usually, these repair kits contain suction cups and small jigs along with the resin to keep the glass flat.
Water Spots
Water spots occur when the minerals are left over from water being on the windshield or even the paint. The easiest way to prevent this is to wipe the car dry when it becomes wet. However, if there are spots that have built up, you polish them off. Auto glass polish can be appllied by hand or with a buffer, but don't use pressure when applying the polish. When it starts to dry, stop polishing and buff away the residue with a microfiber towel.
Know When to Take It to a Pro
Minor nicks, cracks, chips and abrasions are pretty easy for most people to fix, but if dealing with major cracks, stars, spiders or huge chunks missing from the windshield, don't waste time and money only to make the situation worse. Take the car to an automotive windshield repair specialist.
