Captain America is an American comic book series published by Marvel Comics.
Background
Captain America debuted in the midst of World War II. Originally titled Captain America Comics at the time, circulation for the series was reportedly a million a month, more than Time Magazine and other major publications.
Post-war sales of the title slumped, and it was canceled in 1954. The Captain America character returned in 1964 as leader of The Avengers. He also regained his own series, this time titled just Captain America.
Ironically, interest in Captain America peaked again in August 2007 when the character was assassinated. Though Steve Rogers (Captain America's alter ego) has remained dead thus far, his former sidekick Bucky has continued on as the new Captain.
