The 2007 drama Captain Abu Raed is the debut feature film of Jordanian-born writer, director, and producer Amin Matalqais. The film, set in Amman, Jordan, centers on an aging airport janitor (Nadim Sawalha) who has long dreamed of seeing the world. When some local children mistake him for an airline pilot and beg him to share stories of his travels, he obliges with a yarn of his own invention. Matalqais, who emigrated from Jordan to the US at age 13, wrote the film while attending the American Film Institute, and shot it on-location in Jordan over 23 days.
Critical Response
Captain Abu Raed has been well-received by critics. Variety likened it to classic, sentimental Italian and French cinema. The Hollywood Reporter called it, "a substantial, deeply moving film that has the potential to captivate audiences everywhere."
