Cape Cod

Cape Cod, a peninsula on the east coast of Massachusetts, contains 15 towns, and is a popular tourist location between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Provincetown is found at the end of the Cape, and has a reputation as a gay village.

History

Cape Cod was first inhabited by the Wamponoag tribe. In 1602 Cape Cod received its current name, and remains the ninth oldest place name in the United States. The Pilgrims landed near present day Provincetown on November 11, 1620.

By the 1950s, thanks to agricultural abandonment due to the opening of the West in the 1860s, more forests existed than there had been since the 18th century.
