Canine lyme disease is caused by common deer ticks carrying the borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. Canine lyme disease can affect the heart, kidneys, and joints.
Symptoms
Symptoms of canine lyme disease usually occurs 2 to 5 months after initial exposure.
- Fever between 103 and 105 degress
- Lameness in legs
- Swelling of the joints
- Lethargy
Treatment
Treatment for Lyme disease consists of using either a tetracycline, penicillin, doxycycline or amoxicillin. Usually treatment is 14 days, but 30 days is recommended.
