Canine Lyme Disease

  • Canine lyme disease is caused by common deer ticks carrying the borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. Canine lyme disease can affect the heart, kidneys, and joints.
  • Symptoms

    Symptoms of canine lyme disease usually occurs 2 to 5 months after initial exposure.

    1. Fever between 103 and 105 degress
    2. Lameness in legs
    3. Swelling of the joints
    4. Lethargy

  • Treatment

    Treatment for Lyme disease consists of using either a tetracycline, penicillin, doxycycline or amoxicillin. Usually treatment is 14 days, but 30 days is recommended.
