Emmy Award-winning American actress Candice Bergen's character of Murphy Brown became a cultural touchstone in 1992 with Vice President Dan Quayle's critique of Brown's single motherhood. Bergen won five Emmies for her portrayal of Brown, and withdrew her name from competition after the fifth win. She first displayed her comedic chops as the first female host of Saturday Night Live. She now appears in ABC's legal dramedy Boston Legal as law partner Shirley Schmidt.
Other Pursuits
Early in her career, Bergen was a popular model who appeared on the cover of many magazines. She soon decided she preferred being behind the camera, and worked as a photojournalist for Esquire, Cosmopolitan and the morning television show Today. She has also hosted two TV series for the network Oxygen.
