Canandaigua Academy is a public high school located in Canandaigua, New York, with about 1,235 students in 9th through 12th grades. On the morning of May 5, 2009, 17-year-old senior Thomas Kane shot himself to death in one of the school's bathrooms, leading to a lockdown of the school. Death at a Public School
Many of the students at Canandaigua Academy were at lunch at about 11:00 am on May 5, 2009, when they were told over the intercom that they were to remain in their classes, but that the students were in no danger. Police first put the lockdown, then evacuated the students to Canandaigua Middle School, where they went home along with the middle school children.
