Canada

Canada is located on the North American continent. It is bordered on the south by the United States of America, on the north the Arctic Ocean, the west the Pacific Ocean and the east the Atlantic Ocean. The border of Canada and the United States is the longest unguarded border in the world. The land of Canada is varied with mountains to the east, coastline on both the east and west and a continental plain on the interior. The Yukon on the west is covered with mountain ranges, which include the Rocky Mountains. The highest Canadian point is Mount Logan at 19,850 ft. There are two major rivers, the Mackenzie and the St. Lawrence River.

Canada is a federation divided into 10 Provinces and 3 Territories. The Provinces are Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The first people of Canada were native Indian people, mostly the Inuit also called Eskimo. In about 1000, Leif Eriksson probably stepped onto the Canadian shores. But written history begins in 1497 when the explorer John Cabot reached what is now Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. Jacques Cartier claimed the land for French in 1534 and in 1608 Quebec was founded. In the meantime, the English Hudson Bay Company had been putting down roots. This lead to the conflict between France and England called the Seven Year’s War from 1756-1763. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris gave England control of Canada. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0107386.html?pageno=1
