General Motors Place, is more commonly referred to as "GM Place" and is a staple of downtown Vancouver because it is one of the premier sports and entertaining buildings in North America. http://www.generalmotorsplace.com/about-gm-place/the-venue It is the home of the Vancouver Canucks, an NHL franchise that plays in the NHL Northwest division.
The Garage
The building opened in 1995 and has been the home of the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League ever since. The team had previously played home games at Pacific Coliseum. The league has hosted their all-star game there in 1998 as well as the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, and the venue also served as one of several locations for the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.
GM Place was also home to the Vancouver Grizzlies of the NBA from their expansion season of 1995-96 through the end of the 2000-01 season. The team then relocated to Memphis for the following season. The 1998 NBA Draft was also held in GM Place.
Because of the corporate moniker of the building, it is often referred to by its nickname 'The Garage'.
GM Place is known as Canada Hockey Place for the 2010 Olympics
It will be the main venue for all hockey games during the 2010 Winter Olympics, and with the large popularity of hockey in Canada, will likely see be at or near capacity for every one of the hockey games hosted here during the Olympics. Due to the rule that no Olympic venue can be corporately sponsored, during the Winger Olympics, GM Place will be referred as "Canada Hockey Place."
