History
The first manual can opener was patented in 1858 by Ezra J. Warner. The design did not change for much of the next 50 years, when the first serrated wheel can opener was invented in 1925 by the Star Can Company. Just a few years later the first electric model debuted and the technology has continued to evolve in the years since. Modern day can openers include the original manual models as the least expensive, with higher end electric and battery operated models featuring a hands-free option, requiring little to no effort.
Buying Guide
There are a few things to consider when selecting a can opener including type, price and features. The low end manual models are as inexpensive as one dollar, and require the user to apply physical effort to open a can. Basic electric models are reasonably inexpensive but strictly open smaller cans. High end electric and battery powered models often feature other tools, such as a cheese grater, knife sharpener or juicer and may open a variety of sizes of cans and bottles.
