Camping is a recreational activity in which people set up temporary shelter outside using tents or specially designed vehicles. This activity may be undertaken out of necessity, or as a form of vacation. In the United States, numerous locations at state parks, campgrounds and recreation centers cater to camping enthusiasts. Some opt to camp using basic equipment, while others prefer camping in travel trailers. Camping can be done at formal campground sites, in natural areas or even in someone's backyard.
Types of camping are:
Tent - Involves using a tent and camping at a National Park, campground or in the wilderness. Great for people who want to experience nature for a weekend or longer. Camping can be as rustic or with as many amenities as you would like at a campground.
Backpacking - For those with the ability to carry all their supplies along with them usually in a backpack. Backpacking can be for just a day or longer. Most use specially made lightweight camping gear.
Recreational Vehicle - A vehicle specially designed for camping with the comforts of home. Some of the different types are popup trailer, folding trailer, hard sided, fifth wheel and motor home. A RV can include a bathroom, shower, oven, stove, refrigerator, air conditioning, TV, stereo and more.
Canoe Camping - Geared toward the more experienced camper. While canoeing down rivers or across lake, you can stop and camp overnight.
Snowshoe/Winter Camping - For a person with the ability to both snowshoe and carry a backpack. Requires endurance for cold and specialized equipment.
Bike Camping - For all ages and fitness levels. Some tote all their camping gear and some bike as a side activity.
Car Camping - Supplies and camping gear will depend on how long you are staying and where you are going. Sleep in the car or outside under the stars.http://www.ecampguide.com/article.php?ArticleID=1
History
Camping became popular as a recreational activity in the 20th Century. Many campers today use tents or RVs as a source of shelter, but there are also those who prefer a survivalist experience. They take only the bare necessities with them when they set out. It also allows them to live off the land. Other unique camping opportunities include winter camping, workamping and adventure camping.
