Introduction
This is a walkthrough for the original Call of Duty, the first-person shooter from Activision. This guide was written specifically for the "Regular" difficulty setting of the PC version of Call of Duty. Certain elements may differ on other difficulties or systems. -
General Tips
- In general, you'll want your two allotted weapon slots to contain one rifle and one submachine gun/assault rifle. Use the rifle for outdoor or long-range combat and the submachine gun for indoor or close range combat.
- In most levels, it is a good idea to switch at least your submachine gun for a German one like an MP40 or MP44 to guarantee that you have enough ammunition to get through.
- If a level gives you a more special weapon to begin with, like a sniper rifle, keep it until it runs out of ammunition.
- Reload after killing a group of enemy soldiers so you aren't forced to when you deal with the next enemies.
- If you are caught reloading when there are still enemies firing at you, either get to cover or quickly switch to your pistol.
- Use Q and E to peek around corners and release them to get back behind cover.
- Crouch and go prone to better use low cover, either standing back up or looking around the side to shoot enemies.
- As in real life, you are less accurate if you are shooting while you move. You are slightly more accurate while crouching and moving. You are unable to fire while moving from a prone position.
- Unlike many other shooters, your allies are fairly competent and able to deal with enemies on their own. If you are low on life, you can usually wait behind cover long enough to allow your allies to deal with most enemies in an area.
- You don't have to rely on the game's automatic checkpoints. You can quicksave with F5 at any time to create your own checkpoints to return to after death.

Mission 1: Camp Toccoa
- YouTube: Call of Duty Mission 1: Training (Time: 4:09)
- You're simply directed through this training level, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem actually completing this one.
- Captain Foley tells you to look at each sign around you first to confirm you understand how to look around. Focus your crosshairs on each one in turn, as each gives you a minor tip for beating the game, like "Always reload before going into battle".
- Foley then asks you to walk left, right, forwards, and backwards, though this is not even required of you, as he'll just move on even if you stand still.
- To test your movement, Foley asks you to move towards the objective star on your radar.
- Foley directs you to the obstacle course.
- The obstacle course functions like most shooter training levels, asking you to crouch under and through a few obstacles.
- Jump over some more, then crawl under another. Your controls are plainly provided on-screen.
- Climb up the ladder at the end by simply walking into it
- Fall down past it to move onto weapons training.
- Sergeant Moody asks you to pick up the carbine on the table that will be behind you and to the left. Press F to pick it up.
- Walk near the other carbine to get extra ammo.
- You must now shoot the target down-range of you six times (or more). Moody tells you that you're less accurate when you move and more accurate when you crouch. Shoot another six shots into the target.
- You'll be told to move on through the gate to your right.
- You must now pick up a Springfield sniper rifle from the table (use F and walk over the other one for more ammo) so that you can shoot the far away target on the left from where you entered. Shoot it however you want, but Moody will only tell you about firing down the scope using the Right Mouse Button after your first two hits. Move on after you've fired four shots total into the target.
- Pick up the Thompson from the table to replace your Springfield rifle. You have to hit this target ten times with the Thompson much faster but less accurate fire. Moody asks you to switch weapons in order to shoot your target three more times. The Thompson was your second weapon, so you have to press 1 to switch back to your first one. Moody also tells you that the Shift key delivers a melee blow with your weapon.
- There are several grenades on the table in the next area. You have to throw one of them into the three openings (one door and two windows) of the house down-range. Moody also tells you about leaning, but that's not necessary here. Simply move to the right enough to get a good angle on throwing a grenade into the door. The windows will require that you aim a good bit above the actual windows to get a grenade inside them. You'll know you've scored a hit if you hear the same confirmation sound from before when you fired at the targets.
- Moody shows you what the health packets in the game look like on a table in the next area and directs you to pick up some explosives on a table further down.
- Pick them up
- Walk over to the ruins of a wall down-range.
- Press F to plant the explosives
- Get to a safe distance before the stopwatch on your screen gets to zero and the bomb explodes.
- You are given a choice between moving on through the next gate to end training or backtrack for more weapons practice.
- Move through the gate to finish the level.
