Story
Bringing the series back from Modern Warfare to its roots in World War II, Call of Duty World at War focuses on the battles on the Eastern front near the end of the war. You play as a Russian soldier as they invade Germany, and as part of the 1st Marine Division in the Battle of Peleliu and the American invasion of Okinawa in the Pacific Theater. The game promises to showcase the brutality of this war; for instance, there is a depiction of the treatment of American P.O.W.'s at the hands of the Japanese during a rescue near the beginning of the game. -
Gameplay
Continuing the tradition of the Call of Duty series that is known for its visceral intensity, Call of Duty World at War uses the Call of Duty 4 engine to produce stunning graphics and gameplay. New additions to the formula include the ability to swim, set destructible environments on fire with a brand new flamethrower, fire bullets through thin walls to cut holes in them, along with improved physics and lighting. The multiplayer component of the game will feature the brand new online four-player co-op(or two player split-screen), the leveling system found in Call of Duty 4, which allows the online player to gain new abilities and weapons with experience earned through playing. Previously introduced the first time around in the expansion pack, Call of Duty United Offensive, vehicles will be making a return in this installment, as well as advances in squad-based play and more refined spawning. -
