Californication is a dramatic Showtime series starring David Duchovny as Hank Moody, a troubled novelist whose obsessions with sex and drugs interfere with his professional life, as well as his relationships with his ex-wife and daughter.
The show has been largely favorably received by critics and earned two Golden Globe nominations for its first season. However, it has met with some backlash from conservative pundits who decry its explicit depiction of sex and drug use. In November 2007, the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers filed suit against the show claiming that its name capitalizes on the band's 1999 hit single "Californication."
