Calgary Flames Timeline

The Calgary Flames are team in the National Hockey League, playing for the Northwest division of the Western Conference. The team was founded as the Atlanta Flames in 1972 and moved to Calgary in 1980. The 2009-2010 marks the team's 30th anniversary as Calgary's NHL team.http://flames.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=40685

2000- Present

2009 off-season: Brett Sutter is renamed head coach just after a month following Mike Keenan's firing.

2008-2009 season: Jarome Iginla scores his 400th career goal and becomes the Flames all-time points leader

2007-2008 season: Jarome Iginla breaks two records to become the Flames all-time leading scorer and all-time leader in games played.

2005-2006 season: The Flames 25th season in Calgary, at the end of which, they are named the Northwest division champions.http://flames.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=40685 Goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff wins the Vezina and William M. Jennings Trophies.

2003-2004 season: The Flames become the first team in NHL history to defeat three conference champions and make it to the final game of the final round of the Stanley Cup Championships. They are defeated by the San Jose Sharks.

2001-2002 season: Jarome Iginla wins both the Art Ross and Rocket Richard Trophies

1990s

1996: Jarome Iginla joins the Flames, making his debut in the post-season. Iginla goes on to become the team captain in 2003 and break several franchise records

1994-1995: The Flames officially assume management of the Saddledome. The team takes the Pacific Division title for the second year in a row.http://flames.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=40685

1980s

1988-1989 season: The Flames become the Stanley Cup Champions for the first time in franchise history. They also win the Presidents Trophy, the Smythe Division playoff championship and the Clarence Campbell Conference title

1987-1988 season: The team wins the Presidents’ Trophy

1985-1986 season: The Calgary Flames make their first appearance in the Stanley Cup finals; they are defeated by the Montreal Canadiens in the fifth game of the series. However, they are named the Clarence Campbell Conference and Smythe Division playoff champions

1983: The Flames move into their new home arena, the Saddledome

1980: The Flames move to their new hometown and play their inaugural game in the Stampede Corral on October 9, 1980http://flames.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=40685
