History of Calgary

A troop of policemen in 1875, climbed to the top of a valley rim. They found what they were looking for, two clean rivers and forests of spruce and poplar trees. it was the Ideal place to build a fort, and if looked at head a city as well. Colonel James McLeod came up with the title "Calgary".

The railway was built in 1883, and brought in pioneer ranchers. In 1884, Calgary's population was of 4,000. Which was the reason it was officially proclaimed a city. The city looked like the traditional western town. Everything was made of wood, which is why it was destined to be changed after the Great Fire in 1886.

In 1912 with a population of 47,000 a cowboy promoter, by the name Guy Weadick talked to the biggest financial men to back an experiment called the Calgary Stampede. It lost money and the idea was abandoned until 1923 when it was reinstated.

Calgary took a big hit during the Great Depression. But came back to life at the beginning of the second World War. Calgary was and is considered the first cow town, but if you look at it today you will see it has changed at lot but at the same time stayed the same.
