  • Cairo, meaning the vanquiser in Arabic, is the capital and largest city in Egypt. The city was founded in the year 969 AD and throughout its existence has been the center of Egyptian activity. It's located on the Nile River and is slightly west of the Giza desert. Of the 80 million or more people that live in Egypt, over a quarter reside in this massive city.

On Sunday, February 22, 2009, two explosions shook Khan El-Khalili, Cairo's 600-year-old bazaar, killing a young woman and injuring 20 others, mostly french. Tourists, locals and merchants were left puzzling over the details. Some witnesses thought bombs had been left under a bench, but ministry officials say two bombs were dropped from the roof of the Hussein Hotel. The marketplace is a popular place for locals and tourists alike to shop, eat and be entertained, but with the current state of the global economy, shop owners are now afraid the attack will scare people away.
