The moves centers around caddy Danny Noonan, who is played by Michael O'Keefe, who works at the prestigious and snooty Bushwood Country Club. The club is run by Judge Elihu Smails, played by Ted Knight is the owner of the club, and the man that Noonan is attempting to impress. Noonan is attempting to win the caddy scholarship that is awarded at the club to the caddy that wins the tournament sponsored by the judge.
Along the way, Noonan crosses paths with Ty Webb, who is played by Chevy Chase, an antiestablishment member of the club who tries to take Danny under his wing and show him that there is more to life than following the rules all the time. Meanwhile, the judge has conflict with everyone, most notably loudmouth blowhard Al Czervik (played by comedic legend Rodney Dangerfield. Czervik is a real estate tycoon interested in buying the club.
Noonan eventually wins the Caddy Day golf tournament, clinching the scholarship for him. There is a match between Judge Smails and his partner, Dr. Beeper, against Webb and Czervik for $20,000. This was a last ditch effort to avoid a fight following Czervik's declaration of wanting to buy the club. After being struck with a ball, Czervik drops out of the match, and is replaced by Noonan, who took his offer over the judge's when his scholarship was threatened.
On the final hole, Noonan leaves a long putt on the lip of the cup, seeming to clinch the bet, which had gone from $20,000 to $40,000 after the ninth hole, and then doubled again on Czervik betting Noonan would make the putt, for Smails and Beeper. Instead, Carl Spackler, assistant groundskeeper for the course, played by Bill Murray, detonates explosives that he rigged in order to rid the course of a pesky gopher that was digging holes all over the club. The ball falls in the hole, winning the bet for Czervik and Webb, while the gopher dances to the song "I'm All Right" by Kenny Loggins.http://gopherdance.com/
Ironically, this is the only time that Murray and Chase have appeared in a film together in their illustrious careers.
