CAA Tournament

The 2010 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball tournament will take place March 5-8, the winning team will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA March Madness tournament. All 12 teams will participate in the tournament, with first-round games set for March 5, quarterfinals contests on March 6 and the semifinals on March 7. ESPN will televise the championship game on March 8 at 7 p.m. For the 21st consecutive year, the site of the 11-game tournament is the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia. The top four seeds receive byes into the quarterfinals, and winner of the event earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins on March 18. Games times for the first days of the tournament are 12, 2:30, 6 and 8:30 p.m. with separate admission for the afternoon and evening sessions. The semifinal games are scheduled for 3 and 5:30 p.m. Virginia Commonwealth is the defending CAA tournament champion, defeating George Mason, 71-50 in last year's title game. VCU has won three of the last six CAA tournament crowns.Richmond leads the way with five CAA titles, followed by George Mason, Old Dominion, North Carolina Wilmington and VCU with four apiece. CAA Tournament History

Virginia Commonwealth won the 2009 CAA tournament, routing 2008 winner George Mason, 71-50, in the championship game. Eric Maynor, the two-time CAA player of the year, scored 25 points for the Rams, who returned to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. In 2007, VCU shocked Duke in the first round of the 'Big Dance." .

CAA 2010 Tournament

Old Dominion won the CAA regular-season and tournament titles in the 2009-10 season. In the championship game, the Monarchs defeated third-seeded William & Mary, 60-53, on March 8. Darius James scored 12 points and Kent Basemore added 10 for ODU, which earned its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2005. The Monarchs take a 26-8 record into the tournament. William&Mary (22-10) was hoping for at-large bid but it may be a long shot. William&Mary, Army, The Citadel, Northwestern and St. Francis, N.Y., are the only original Division I teams never to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. First-round results on March 5 were: No. 8 seed Towson 91, No. 9 North Carolina-Wilmington 74; No. 5 VCU 66, No. 12 Delaware 49; No. 7 Hofstra, 68, No. 10. Georgia State 67; and No. 11 James Madison 77, No. 6 Drexel 65. In the quarterfinals, No. 2 seed Northeastern survived a scare before holding off Hofstra, 74-71, in double overtime. No. 1 ODU routed Towson, 86-56, and No. 3 William & Mary ousted James Madison, 70-65. In a minor upset, No. 5 VCU toppled No. 4 George Mason, 75-60. In the semifinals, ODU got past VCU, 73-69, in overtime and Willian & Mary edged Northeastern, 47-45.
