The Colonial Athletic Association is celebrating its 25th year of operation during the 2009-10 season. It is a Division I conference comprising 12 schools on the East Coast. Formerly, it was just a southern conference, when it was founded in 1983 as the ECAC South, but it assumed its current name in 1985.
The league currently has 12 members for men's basketball ranging from Georgia to Massachusetts. Drexel, Hofstra, Delaware and Townson were added in 2001 with Georgia State and Northwestern joining in 2005. The conference sponsors 21 sports, although most of the focus is on men's basketball. The top highlight in 25-year history of the league came in 2006, when George Mason reached the Final Four of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The Patriot upset two-time national champion Connecticut, 86-84, in overtime in the regional finals to become the first CAA team to reach the national semifinals. George Mason also was the first mid-major school to reach the Final Four since the NCAA expanded the tournament to 64 teams in 1985. The CAA conducts a postseason men's basketball tournament and the winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Virginia Commonweath is the defending champion.
