BuzzFeed is an online journal and conglomeration of the hottest trends and popular content in social media. Users of the site can view popular news articles, images, and videos, and rate and promote them according to their tastes. The site was created in 2006 as a project of Contagious Media in an effort to track and monitor viral media, social media trends, and promote viral content. The founders of BuzzFeed are Ze Frank and Jonah Peretti, and currently employs 18 full-time staff members, including Indie artist Peggy Wang and Jason Kottke who promote, test, and track viral content through BuzzFeed Labs.
In addition to being able to view the most popular and timely content of the day, users can rate media by choosing whether they love it or hate it, then categorizing to according to several different variables, such as lol, trashy, geeky, ew, omg, and cute. Research conducted by BuzzFeed is used by many bloggers, journalists, and social media experts to find content and gauge the pulse of the internet community, as well as marketers who want to promote their own site or products. Aside from providing some of the hottest trends in social media today, the content of the site groups together some of the most entertaining bits of information as well.
