Butternut Squash

The butternut squash, native to Mexico, is a winter squash with a thick yellow skin and orange flesh. It has a sweet and nutty flavor and is similar to sweet potato or pumpkin.

Culinary uses

Butternut squash is a versatile vegetable that is typically roasted and then mashed or puréed, but can also be boiled or sauteed. It is used in soups, ravioli, casseroles, bread, and pastries.

In South Africa, butternut squash is often wrapped in aluminum foil with cinnamon and nutmeg and cooked on a barbecue.
