Background
Busta Rhymes, who is of Jamaican heritage, was born in Brooklyn, New York. When he was 12 his family moved to Uniondale, New York, a suburb of New York City on Long Island. There he eventually met up with other artists from the area's growing hip hop community, including rappers Jay-Z and Notorious B.I.G..His musical career began at the age of 17 as a member of the Hip Hop crew Leaders of the New School. They began recording in 1989 and released their debut album A Future Without a Past in 1991 on Elektra Records. Soon after the release of their second album, however, internal problems arose within the group and they broke up on the set of Yo! MTV Raps.
Three years after the break up, Busta released his debut solo album, The Coming in 1996. The album was met with commercial and critical success and ended up going Platinum. Busta Rhymes followed up The Coming with several other successful albums including When Disaster Strikes, E.L.E.: The Final World Front and Anarchy.
