Causes And Effects of Burkholderia cepacia
Burkholderia cepacia or B.cepacia was discovered in rotting onions in 1949 by Walter Burkholder, a plant pathologist, at Cornell University. It is a gram-negative and aerobic microbe that cannot survive without air. It can be found in water, soil and rotting plants. It is a powerful antifungal, antitoxin, and is useful for degrading chemicals in the environment. It is, on the other hand, a pathogen quite harmful to humans because of its resistance to penicillin and ability to mutate rapidly. Cystic fibrosis patients are especially susceptible because of a tendency to attack the respiratory system.http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/vol4no2/holmes.htm<ref/>
