Twilight Zone Roles
Before his recurring role on Batman, Burgess Meredith had already had several appearances on the popular sci-fi and horror television show, The Twilight Zone. One of these roles in particular would contain an iconic moment for the show, and for Meredith's career: The episode entitled Time Enough at Last featured Meredith as a book bank teller Henry Bemis who survives a nuclear holocaust, giving him the solitude and time he needs to read all the books his heart desires. In the ironic twist ending, his glasses break after he is through organizing his books, damning him to a lone, purposeless life. He proclaims "that's not fair" in a moment that would be remembered (and parodied) for many years to come.
