Bulgarian Alphabet
Written Bulgarian first appeared during the 9th century, using the Glagolithic alphabet (developed by St. Cyril and St. Methodus). This alphabet migrated to Old Church Slavonic, and then an early version of Cyrillic, over the next few centuries as the language evolved. Peter the Great formalized Cyrillic during the early 18th century, and Russian cultural influences caused this "civil script" to also be used in Bulgaria. Around the 1870s Marin Drinov developed a 32 letter alphabet. Two letters were dropped in 1945, leaving the current system of 30 letters.Omniglot: Bulgarian Omniglot: Bulgarian
