Inspired by the 1940s Havana social club that bears its name, the Buena Vista Social Club was a group of Cuban musicians who were brought together by American guitarist Ry Cooder and Cuban band leader Juan de Marcos Gonzalez to record an album of traditional and original Cuban music. The resulting album was a massive international hit and helped spark a Latin and Cuban music craze around the globe. Many of the individual musicians on the recording also went on to release their own solo albums, most notably singer Ibrahim Ferrer and pianist Ruben Gonzalez.
