In this video, Mahalo wedding expert Dana LaRue shows you how to make a silk flower bouquet for your wedding.
What You'll Need
- Silk flowers
- Floral tape
- Ribbon
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Scissors
Step 1: Start with Statement Flowers
The best way to start when purchasing silk flowers is to pick some big, colorful buds that are some of your favorites. Peonies are a great idea because they have large petals and are the perfect pink-blush color.
Step 2: Add Accents
Choose filler flowers that are the same color as your main flowers and layer them around your statement flowers.
Alternative 1: Make it Pop
If you want, select some flowers that are a different color than the others in your bouquet. Perhaps go with an electric blue. Add only a few stems of these into your bouquet for a surprisingly beautiful splash of color.
Alternative 2: Add Lowlights
Instead of the brightly colored accents, you can choose a color of accent flowers that are either in the same color family or are complementary. For example, if your main flowers are pink, you may want to choose a few stems of periwinkle flowers to add some color but not overwhelm the bouquet.
Alternative 3: Go Bold
If you want to do something totally different, you can choose three to five stems of a big, bright flower like a gerber daisy and tie them together. Consider leaving the long stem intact for an added statement.
Final Touch: Wrap it Up
With the stems bunched together in the exact arrangement that you want, wrap the floral tape around the bundle, starting halfway down the length of the stem and continuing all the way to the bottom.
Once the stems are securely bundled together, cut some ribbon from the roll and wrap it around the stems like you would wrap up a sprained ankle. Though it doesn't necessarily matter if the floral tape went around smoothly or evenly, you want to make sure that the ribbon is evenly spaced. Hot glue the end of the ribbon and trim off any extra.
