After leaving the Hurricanes practice at 5:15 p.m., Pata returned to his off-campus apartment in Kendall, Florida. According to his family, Pata was involved in an argument with an unknown in the parking lot of the apartment complex shortly before his death. He was later found just after 7:00 p.m. face down in the parking lot by his girlfriend, Jada Brody, whom he was planning to marry. Pata had been shot repeatedly in the back of the head.
