College football player Bryan Pata played four seasons with the Miami Hurricanes and was expected to be drafted into the National Football League before he was shot and killed on November 7, 2006. After leaving the Hurricanes practice at 5:15 p.m., Pata returned to his off-campus apartment in Kendall, Florida. According to his family, Pata was involved in an argument with an unknown in the parking lot of the apartment complex shortly before his death. He was later found just after 7:00 p.m. face down in the parking lot by his girlfriend, Jada Brody, whom he was planning to marry. Pata had been shot repeatedly in the back of the head.
