The Brussels Airport is a building full-sized structure with four levels and two terminals, an A terminal and a B terminal. For convenient transportation, the train station, and buses are located on the airport’s underground level along with baggage lockers. The second level is for arrivals. This is the location of the currency exchange desk, internet center, train ticket counter, and welcome center. The third level is for departures. A variety of cafes and restaurants are located throughout the two terminals on levels two, three, and four. Many shops can be found in these areas to get last minute chocolates, perfumes, luggage, and souvenirs. The fourth level is the location of the airport pharmacy.
Taxi stands are located in front of arrivals. If you are looking to rent a car Herz, Avis, Europcar, and Sixt have counters within the airport. The Sheraton Brussels Airport Hotel is located across from the passenger terminal for a convenient night’s stay. http://www.brusselsairport.be/en/about-airport
Brussels International Airport History
In August 1914 the German troops invaded Belgium in search of a suitable area to build an airfield. In February 1915 a Berlin-based company completed Haren, the airfield, which would start a history of aviation in Belgium.
After World War I was over, the Belgian military started to use the airfield and the remaining planes. The Belgian National Airline was created in 1923 and set up a test flight carrying two passengers from Brussels to London, and back in a former German bomber. The whole flight took seven and a half hours. Little by little scheduled services were organized between Brussels, London, and Paris. By the middle of the 1930s several foreign airlines operated from Brussels’ national airport.
On May 10, 1940 the German troops invaded Belgium once again and occupied the landing field within a week. Soon after the invasion they began the construction of a new airfield, Melsbroek. After the Second World War, all scheduled airlines left Haren and took off at Melsbroek. In 1956 the construction of a new airport, Zaventem was approved. Melsbroek was gradually becoming too small especially for since Belgium would be hosting the upcoming 1958 World Exhibition. In 1987 an extension connecting to the 1958 terminal was completed. In recent years, the Brussels International Airport has been named the "Best Airport in Europe" by several organizations (including ACI/ IATA/AETRA).http://www.brusselsairport.be/en/about-airport
